February 2012: Juice Fast

After last month’s Stop Working Late experiment, I wanted to do something that wasn’t work-related for my February experiment.

A few months ago, my friend Bradley from Pass The Sour Cream told me about a documentary called “Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead.” Despite the depressing title, it’s a very inspiring story about two guys who are, you guessed it, fat, sick and nearly dead. The film follows the filmmaker, Joe Cross, and an American truck driver as they rediscover their health and fitness by way of a juice fast.

You can watch the entire film for free on the Juice Fast Experiment hub page.

Anyway, Bradley decided to go on a juice fast at the end of 2011 and recently wrote an awesome post about reaching his goal weight. I was inspired to try a juice fast myself to see what would happen.

Juice Fast Update #1: Days 1-4

It’s early in the morning on Day 4 of my juice fast experiment¬†and I wanted to post a quick update on how things are going so far.

Day 1

For me, Day 1 wasn’t actually so bad. I had expected this experiment to be similar to other challenges I’ve done in the past. Usually the first couple days are the toughest and then I go into cruise control and my new habits become easier. I was surprised at how easy the first day on my juice fast went. I woke up a little earlier than usual, fired up my shiny new Breville juicer and made about two liters of juice.

Juice Fast Update #2: 10 Days of Juice Fasting

As you may know, I’ve been on a juice fast for the last 10 days. I’ve traded my regular diet for nothing but fresh juice from fruits and vegetables. I’m also allowing myself the occasional cup of green tea to help my detox from caffeine.

So, how are things going? Here are a few things I’ve learned so far.

Juice Fast Weight Loss Total

Juice Fast Weight LossIt’s the end of the month, end of my juice fast and I haven’t posted an update since the 10-day mark.

I’ve had a lot of questions about my juice fast weight loss. When we left off, I’d lost 8 lbs in 10 days. I’d made it through the tough transition phase, learned it’s not easy to keep up a juice fast while traveling and realized that intense exercise and juice fasting didn’t mix well.

I’ll post a final juice fast weight loss total (with a graph) at the end of this post.

Lessons Learned From My 1-Month Juice Fast

Juice Fast Weight LossYou might remember that I did a 1 month juice fast back in February of 2012. It ended up being one of my most popular experiments, and also one of my least favorite.

I’ve gotten a lot of questions about it, and thought it was time I finally answered them.

Some of the answers might surprise you.

Why the hell did I do it?

This is the most common question I get from people who know me really well, and I suspect I did a juice fast for a really different reason than most people.

The idea of me doing a juice fast is crazy because I love food (and eat more) than just about anyone I know. I’ve been an athlete my whole life, and have always had an extremely fast metabolism. After a hard day of climbing, it’s not unheard of for me to wolf down two super burritos while my friends struggle to finish one.

“Second dinner” is a real thing in my house.

And in a way, my love of food is why I decided to do the juice fast: I thought it would be really really hard for me to do.

I had this idea that willpower was like a muscle, and I was frustrated that mine wasn’t stronger at times. I wanted to change that, and I figured if I could give up food for a month, any other challenge would seem tiny.
