About the Monthly Experiments Project

Welcome! I’m glad you’re here.  Let me show you around.

Who Am I?

My name is John Muldoon. I live in Northern California, and I’ve been an entrepreneur since 2003.

This blog is simple. I take on a new personal experiment every month and share what I learn. Some experiments are just for fun. Others are designed so I can learn a new skill or create a new habit.

Why I Started This Project

At the end of 2011, I was pretty miserable, but almost no one knew it.

I had a successful company, a good reputation, nice house, cars, adorable dog, a passport full of ink, good friends, the whole lot. From the outside, it looked like I was a big success. But, I didn’t feel like one.

The truth is that I was seriously burnt out. I had developed some terrible boundaries with my business. I was working too much, and having too little fun. It wasn’t always like that, but that’s where I was at. It was starting to take a toll on my health and my happiness.

I knew I had to make a change, but I wasn’t sure where to start.

I sat and wrote down what my life had become: the good, the bad, everything. It wasn’t easy, but I was brutally honest with myself.

Then I wrote down what I wanted my ideal life to be like. I got specific. I wrote down what I wanted in terms of my life, finances, fitness, hobbies, business, everything. I even wrote about what my average day would be like in my ideal life. I called it my “Ideal Lifestyle Picture.”

The ideal lifestyle picture looked great… but there was a pretty big gap between where I was at and where I wanted to go.

I knew I couldn’t jump the gap all at once. So, I took my ideal lifestyle apart and looked at all the different pieces. If I couldn’t have it all at once, I chose to build my ideal lifestyle one piece at a time.

I always loved experimentation and trying new things, so I decided to try a monthly experiment as a tool to build my ideal lifestyle.

My First Experiment

In January of 2012 I started my first monthly experiment. For the entire month of January, I wasn’t allowed to do any work after 5:00, and no work on weekends. It wasn’t easy, but the results made a huge impact on my life.

The monthly experiment had worked! I knew I had discovered something powerful, and I’ve been doing new monthly experiments ever since.

What’s In It For You?

The best part of this project has nothing to do with me. I share everything here because I want to help other people live the life they want.

I’ve been blown away by how many of YOU are trying your own monthly experiments and getting amazing results. We’re starting to build a community here, and it’s really exciting. I’d like to invite you to join us!

5 Reasons You Should Join Us

  1. It’s fun to try something new.
  2. It’s only a month. A month is easy. It’s bite-size. You can do that.
  3. You can’t fail at an experiment.
  4. It’s good to challenge yourself once in a while.
  5. Many experimenters say it helps them create better habits.

Bonus reason: It’s more fun to do this together. 🙂 A lot of people have had life-changing results when doing their own monthly experiments.
